Imparting craftmen's abilities to pupils - like sewing, treating wood and also housekeeping - are included in the teaching programme of the 12th-form secondary school at Awasa, capital of the Ethiopian administrative region of Sidamo.
Until 1990, illiteracy shall be done away with and an obligatory public school attendance up to the 6th class will be introduced. Within a period of further six years, 8th-form obligatory schools shall be gradually introduced. Like here at Awasa, young people will have the opportunity to prepare for a university study by attending a 12th-form secondary school which shall be established in all of the 14 administrative regions in Ethiopia.
