Scope and content
Built with the help of the GDR and Cuba, Ethiopia's biggest cement works, New Mugher, will soon be completed. Engineer Peter Urban (l.) from the GDR instructs his Ethiopian colleagues in the operation of the switching station.
Still a few years ago, only grass and bushes covered the nearly 3,000-metre-high plateau which is cut across by the steeply descending valley of Mugher river. Today, the so far biggest cement works of Ethiopia is being built in this place situated some 100 kilometres west of Addis Ababa. Modern dwelling houses with connection to the mains are erected near the works for the families of the some 600 Ethiopian cement workers who will get a job in New Mugher. Cement from new Mugher will soon help improve the living conditions of tens of thousands of other working people in Ethiopia. Still this year, the works will start the production of 1,000 tons of cement per day.
