Scope and content

Ernie Old, of Melbourne Australia the "iron man" of cycling, took up endurance-riding seriously after he turned 70. Since then he has pedaled 60,000 miles over all the highways and back roads of the Australian continent. He has crossed the continent East and West and North and South. He has crisscrossed every Australian State. He did one 6000 mile ride at the age of 74 and a 2000 mile ride at 84. He had his last long ride in early 1961—in early midsummer at the age of 86. Then he retired on medical advise after a heart attack.
The above photograph by Australian Official Photograph shows Ernie setting off on a 2000 mile ride from Melbourne across the Australian Continent to Perth at the age of 74.
