Fourteen people lost their loves in the fire which broke out at Bode, Northern Norway — aboard the Norwegian liner "Erling Jarl". Hundreds of people on the quayside watched as the 300 passengers came ashore from the burning liner — not knowing that seven passengers were trapped in a saloon on the upper deck. It is believed that the fire was started by a cigarette left in a linen cupboard.
