Scope and content
David Allen (Gloucestershire) is today England's first choice as off-spinner. Born on October 25th 1935 he has played in 11 Tests, including four against the Australians this year. All these Test appearances have been made in the space of two years.
It was only in 1959 that he had his first full season with the county, when he headed the bowling averages with 70 wickets at less than 16 runs each.
He was invited to play against India in the same season but had to decline as he was injured.
An accurate bowler, he uses variations of pace and flight cleverly.
His batting has improved and this year he scored his first century in county games when he made 121 not out against Nottinghamshire. A stubborn 42 not out in the Fifth Test against Australia, helped England to save the game.
Allen has already given evidence of his capabilities when his seven for 67 against the Governor's XI Lyallpur, Pakistan, played an important part in the MCC's narrow victory.
