Lengede, West Germany: Trapped 20-ft below ground in the Mathilde Iron Mine here, one of three miners, Emil Pohlai, 34, wait and hopes for rescue. This picture was taken during the night by one of the other trapped miners with a camera sent down by the rescuers.
The three men, trapped in an air pocket, have been entombed since last Thursday when the mine became flooded. Forty of their comrades died in the flooding.
Rescue workers hope that one of two drills boring escape holes will break through to the air pocket some time this afternoon.
