All smiles in the decompression chamber installed atop their escape shaft are the three miners rescued on November 1st from the air pocket 262 -ft below the surface of the flooded Mathilde iron-ore mine. Right to left: Emil Pohlai (34), Fritz Leder (36), and Gerhard Hanusch (43). On left is Mathilde pit boss, Paul Syska, who volunteered to go down in the torpedo-shaped rescue capsule to assist the trapped men to escape.
This picture was taken by one of the two doctors present in the decompression chamber waiting to treat the rescued men as they reached the surface after being entombed for more than a week.
