Scope and content
Eighteen-month-old Anne Herberston (seen with a nurse) had a miracle escape from death beneath the wheels of a train on a level crossing at Usworth in Durham, England. She and two-year-old playmate Audrey Laing were playing on the crossing when the diesel freight train bore down on them, brakes jammed and hooter blowing. Mrs. Margaret Henderson (61), ran from the door of her home 20 yards from the crossing and managed to pull Audrey clear. But Anne fell beneath the wheels of the train. The locomotive and 22 carriages passed over her — but she was only slightly injured.
