Five men were killed at Polhengoda, Kirillapone, when a 40ft high cabook hillock which they were digging crashed down on them burying them. Three others were seriously injured. They were removed to the general hospital. According to the police about 12 persons were cutting cabook when the tragedy occurred at 10:45am. The earth loosened by rain was further weakened by the scooping operations and crashed down on the workers below. As soon as the earth slip started the men took to their heels. Two of them escaped but a third was buried while he was running his body was crushed. Hundreds thronged to the site to watch joint rescue operations by the Police, the Fire Brigade and Land Development workers. They had to be dispersed as they hampered rescue operations. Bereaved families kept on wailing while the men were dug out. The dead are Martin of Polhengoda, Reyal of the same area Charlie of Thalwathugoda, Martin of Nawala and Sonny of Delkanda. The injured are T.Wilfred Peiris of Nawala, W.H Winnie of Kelaniya, W.D Pedrick of Rajagiriya and V.G Amarasena of Nawala.
