'Eagle' Airborne Again
After 2-month repair at Katunayake
A Cunard Eagle Air-ways four-engined D.C.-6 plane left Katunayake airport on Thursday morning after extensive repairs to its engines and undercarriage.
This aircraft which was carrying a crew of four and freight valued at nearly Rs. 1 1/2 million, landed on its belly after one of its wheels failed to come into position just before landing. The accident took place about two months ago.
The plane was scheduled to call at Katunayake for refuelling. Later extensive repairs were done and a number of parts and 12 aircraft engineers were flown out from London, to repair the badly damaged undercarriage and two of the engines.
An airport official told the "Daily Mirror" that the skill of the pilot prevented injury to those on board. The freight too, was not damaged.
The Katunayake airport fire brigade rushed up to the plane as it landed and directed their hoses at the petrol tank. But there no fire.
Picture shows the plane receiving a final check before resuming its flight.
