The Duke of Kent, who is representing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Independence celebrations in Sierra Leone, shakes hands with chiefs of the tribes of Sierra Leone at a garden party held at Government House in Freetown, the capital.
Sierra Leone's first day of independence, April, 27, was marked by the State opening of Parliament by the Duke of Kent. The instruments of independence were presented by the Duke to Sir Milton Margai, the Prime Minister, and the former Governor, Sir Maurice Dorman, was sworn in as the country's first Governor-General.
