Scope and content
An exciting Scene From "The Devil's Disciple"
"The Devil's Disciple", one of the most actionful, lusty and wickedly witty of all of George Bernard Shaw's plays, has been made into a movie starring Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and Laurence Oliver. The picture filmed on location in England, opens tomorrow.. at the Olympia Theatre through United Artists release.
Supporting the triumvirate of stars are Janette Scott, lovely 19-year-old English discovery, Eva LeGallienne and Harry Andrews with Basil Sydney, George Rose, Neil McCallum and Mervyn Johns.
"The Devil's Disciple" is a Hecht - Hill - Lancaster Films Limited and Braynaprod S. A. Presentation. Harold Hecht produced and Guy Halmilton directed the John Dighton-Roland Kibbee screen adaptation of Shaw's famous drama of the American Revolutionary War.
Some of the funniest and most biting lines Shaw ever wrote were assigned to General John—"Gentleman Johnny"— Burgoyne, commander of the British forces, and a man of extreme sophistication, wit and grace. As Gentleman Johnny, Sir Laurense Oliver gives one of his brilliant performances in "The Devil's Disciple."
The role of Dick Dudgeon—the devil's disciple himself—is played by Kirk Douglas, fresh from his role in the fabulous box-office success, "The Vikings." Douglas shines as the headstrong, reckless, cynical and highly romantic Dudgeon, who unexpectedly finds himself prepared to sacrifice his own life for that of the husband of the woman he loves.
Douglas and Burt Lancaster are appearing together for the third time in "The Devil's Disciple," their previous co-starring films having been "I Walk Alone" and "Gunfight at O.K. Corral."
