Scope and content
Desertification Means Famine. Food aid came too late for two of the three children of this Ethiopian mother; days after this photo was taken they died. According to UNEP each year 21 million hectares of once productive land is rendered useless for farming and a further 6 million ha. is reduced to desert. The economic costs are staggering: some $26 billion per year. The social costs must be very much higher. (UNEP/Charles Stewart)
