Scope and content

Eighteen months ago, an earth slip occurred in the premises of Diyawannaram Temple, Nawala, burying three men. The three men were however rescued. Yesterday a similar earth slip occurred at almost the same spot. A 24-year old youth M. Simeon of Kirillapone who was cutting earth at the site was buried alive. Simeon was working alone at the time. Two others, Periyasami and Mahatoon, stood nearby. Piyadesa, Siriwardane and Magalingam who had worked there earlier had left the site with a lorry load of earth.
Simeon was buried under a pile of earth and rock. He was extricated and taken to the General Hospital, but life was found to be extinct.
