Scope and content
In a breathtaking finish 24-year-old Olaf Ludwig (GDR/foreground left) won the second stage of the 37th International Peace Cycle Race over 194 kilometers from Magdeburg to Gera, his hometown. He was followed home by Venelin Hubenov (r./Bulgaria/second) and Anton Novosad (c./Czechoslovakia/third) who finished second behind world champion Uwe Raab in Magdeburg.
On the following day, Olaf Ludwig gained his second stage victory in Gera, the victory in the individual time trial over 26 kilometers. Thousands of cheering spectators helped "their" rider win. He won the "race against time" ahead of Nentcho Staikov (Bulgaria) and Pyotr Ugryumov (Soviet Union), thus continuing an incomparable series of success. Since his Peace Cycle debut in 1980, Olaf Ludwig has dominated the concurrence in eight consecutive time trials. At the same time, the 1982 Peace Cycle Race winner and sixth of the 1983 World Championships increased the number of stage victories to altogether nineteen. This result, too, is unique in the tour's history. Through this time trial success, he took over the yellow jersey of the overall individual leader from world champion Uwe Raab. After the first rest day, the now 107 riders from 18 countries will enter the second third of the race leading them into the Czechoslovak mountains.
