Scope and content
Olaf Ludwig (GDR/photo) gained his third victory at the 8th stage over 178 kilos from Kutno to Puznan (PR of Poland) on May 17th, 1982, during the 35th International Peace Cycle Race Prague-Warsaw-Berlin. In the compactly arriving bunch, he again proved to be an outstanding sprinter and clearly outdistanced the competitors. Olaf Ludwig had won the prologue at the beginning of the race and the 4th stage from Dubnica to Ostrava (Czechoslovakia). Photo shows him during this stage at Frenstat. The spurt qualities of the GDR cyclist with number 59 are well known. Furthermore he is an outstanding time triallist. After two thirds of the 1982 Peace Cycle Race, Olaf Ludwig possesses four of race's top jerseys: the pink one of of the most versatile cyclist, the violet on of the most active cyclist (premium spurts), the white on of the cyclists with the best points (classification with finish arrivals), and the blue jersey of the leading team (GDR team has been leading since the start in Prague). Olaf Ludwig has gained altogether eleven stage victories - including his victory at Poznan - at Peace cycle races so far. 22 year old sports student from the Wismut Gera Sports Association was placed fourth at the 1981 Peace Cycle Race, thus being the best GDR cyclist in this race. Victories at the 1977 World Junior Championships and at the team road race in 1978. He was placed second at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980, and became World Champion in team road race in Prague in 1981.
