Point cycling was the last event at the World Cycling Championships in the Olympic track disciplines which ended in Leicester (Great Britain) on August 29th, 1982. Point cycling over 50 kilometres - 150 laps in Leicester - with classifications in every fifth lap was included in the programme of the world championships for the sixth time. The GDR participated for the second time and already celebrated their second victory. The GDR gained two world champion titles on the 333 metre wooden tracks Detlef Macha won the 4000 metre individual pursuit and Hans Joachim Pohl from Frankfurt-on-order became the world junior champion over 3000 metres in Vienna in 1977 and was placed fifth the year before - follows in the steps of Lutz Hsueisen from Gera.
