150 firemen fight blaze in Brazil's biggest post-war cargo liner: "CORINTHIC" saved after dangerous list.
Britain's biggest post-war merchant ship— the 15,000 tons cargo line "Corinthic" — caught fire in her fitting-out basin at Camell-Laird's shipyard at Birkenhead. More than 150 firemen fought the blaze in the hold of the ship, which was threatening to capsize under the thousands of tons of water pumped into her. Many times hoses had to be turned off because the water in the ship's holds was threatening her stability. The vessel was within a few weeks of going out on trial as the world's largest refrigerated ship.
