Commander J. D. Russell, Fleet Air Arm, piloting a "Scimitar" supersonic-fighter crashed to his death after making a landing on the aircraft-carrier "Victorious" in the English Channel. The aircraft had made a perfect deck landing, when the "arrester" wire broke and pilot and plane crashed into the sea. A rating was immediately lowered from the helicopter standing by in case of emergency, while Commander Russell could be seen still in the cockpit of the partly submerged plane. He was seen to remove his helmet and open and close the cockpit but was apparently unable to climb out.
Before the helicopter rescuer could reach him both pilot and plane had disappeared beneath the waves. Picture shows the rating being lowered from the helicopter hovering above the partly submerged "Scimitar" immediately after the crash.
