Âmbito e conteúdo
The bus which was flung some distance away was a complete wreck, the engine being wrenched off the body. No one was hurt.
The bus belonging to a private tourist company was on a test run about 56:30 am yesterday when the accident occurred. The sound of the impact woke the residents of the area.
According to the driver of the bus Karunamuni Wilson Silva he was riding the bus on a test run and was returning to the garage of wanathamula when it stalled on the unprotected level-crossing. He could not start the bus which was in the middle of the track.
He then heard a train approaching. He and the cleaner, P.S Jinadasa ran along the track waving and shouting to the engine driver to stop the train but it was too late. It was only after the collision that the train came to a halt.
The engine driver had told the police that he heard two men shouting and running along the track but did not take serious notice of them. If they had stood on the track and waved their hands he would have brought the train to a halt. When he noticed the bus on the rail track, It was too late. Picture shows the bus as it lay by the level crossing after the accident.
