The captain and crew of the ill-fated tramp ship Union Atlantic were safe and snug when on board the rescue ship 'Maidan' which called at the Colombo Harbour early yesterday morning.
But 38 men who had for 18 hours waged a brave, but futile battle against the menacing waves that flooded the Union Atlantic No.1 and No.2 holds still showed visible signs of shock and disappointment at the loss of their ship— their pride.
With steam pumps, buckets and any kind of container capable of holding water, the 38 sailors fought in vain against the waters that gradually claimed their ship. All seemed lost and they even lost hope of their SOS being answered. But there was some luck left. 'Maidan' answered their call and saved them.
Captain E.D. Holmes, the 69-year-old master of the ship, was naturally a very sad man. He is thinking of giving up the sea, "I think I am too old for this business now. I would rather play cricket with the kids", he said.
He told me how, he was on his way to the Maidan fro the Union Atlantic by lifeboat, the boat had sprung a leak and while the only other man with him on the boat threw everything including equipment overboard he (the captain) just managed to get the lifeboat alongside the Maidan.
The survivors will soon be flown to Hong Kong.
