Hero's widow holds his picture.
The hand holding this picture is the hand of a hero's widow. She is Mrs. Josephine Rhodes. The picture of her husband, Charles, 27, a surgeon-lieutenant, who twice went into the stricken submarine in a desperate attempt. He went down with the Sidon. As she held the picture for this photograph, Mrs. Rhodes said: "I treasure it so much I cannot bear to part with it". Earlier, Mrs. Rhodes and her fortnight-old baby daughter went to the submarine's depot ship. There officers told of her husband's bravery; the bravery that cost him his life.
