U.S. astronauts Charles Conrad (left) and Gordon Cooper. sporting eight-day beards, chat with President Johnson after completing their record-setting orbital flight in the Gemini-5 spacecraft. The astronauts were aboard the recovery carrier USS Lake Champlain and the President was at his ranch home in Johnson City, Texas. Mr. Johnson congratulated the spacemen for a job "well done". He added: "You have certainly proved, I think, once and for all that man has a place in the exploration of the great frontier of space." Gemini-5 was launched August 21 from Cape Kennedy, Florida, and splashed down August 29 in the Atlantic.
