South Korea's new "strong man"? will be Lt. Gen. Chang Do-young, shown here, who led the military coup d'état on May 16 to grip the control of the Republic of Korea. The ROK Army Chief of Staff is heading the military junta created immediately after the ROK military force toppled the government of Premier John M. Chang. Chang was educated in a Japanese university and was called to the colors near the end of the last World War. After Japan's defeat, he served as chief of Information Bureau, Army Staff Office, of Korea in Nov. 1949; in 1953, graduated from US Staff College and held a series of important military posts in postwar ROK. Prior to his appointment as Army Chief of Staff, he was Commander of the 2nd ROK Army until recently.
