Scope and content

The United States has scheduled an attempt to land men on the moon. Vital to the success of this mission will be the descent to the Lunar surface of two crew men in the Lunar Module as a third astronaut keeps the Apollo spacecraft in orbit around the moon. A Saturn V rocket will launch Apollo 9 into earth orbit tomorrow to flight-test the Lunar Module.
Standing in front of the Lunar Module are the crew (from left) Astronauts Russell L. Schweikart, James A. McDivitt and David R. Scott. Commander McDivitt and LM Pilot Schweikart will test-fly the LM during the 10-day orbital mission of Apollo 9, while Command Pilot Scott remains in the Apollo 9.
