Pictured here is Astronaut M. Scott Carpenter blowing into air tubes during a breathing test at Langley Field, Virginia, NASA's Manned Spacecraft Centre. He trained rigorously in hi Mercury pressure suit, filled with pure oxygen during his orbital flight. The special rubber collar is designed to keep water out of his suit in event of his landing in the ocean.
