Scope and content
Apollo-15 astronauts David Scott, Alfred Worden and James Irwin, posing in front of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, display the moon-orbiting sub-satellite at Manned Spacecraft Center, Florida. The battery-powered Rover is equipped with a color television camera. Controlled from earth, the camera can transmit a full view of the landscape as astronauts Scott and Irwin explore the moon. The sub-satellite will be ejected from the Service Module early in the return mission and remain in lunar orbit after the astronauts return to earth. Close-up of a wheel from the Rover left shows the intricate construction of wire-mesh tires with titanium treads which permit better traction on the silky, sandy-type moon surface; their use eliminates the possibility of an explosion of the conventional air-filled rubber tires on the moon which without atmospheric pressure. Four electric motors, one on each wheel, will power the Rover.
