Scope and content
These are some of the exhibits at the exhibition and sale of work of handicrafts by patients of the Mental Hospital, Angoda, which was opened at the Red Cross Society Hall yesterday evening by the Minister of Health Senator (Dr.) M. V. P. Peiris.
A message to the exhibition from the Director of Health Services, Dr. W. A. Karunaratne, says: "After centuries of ostracism, during which the mentally sick were labelled as 'lunatics' and regarded as creatures irrevocably cut off from society and who had to be locked up in institutions or even chained in prisons, today a new and rapidly developing concept is planning itself for the future well-being of the mentally sick."
This is the first exhibition of work by Mental Hospital patients. The exhibits range from baskets and cushions to cane drawing-room suites.
