19 year old Andres Ganske gained the title in 1,000 m time trials at the ninth GDR Indoor Cycle Race Championships at Berlin's Indoor track. Clocking 1:06.72 min he improved the former track record by four-fold world champion Lothar Thoms in 1978 by 72 hundredth of a second. Ganske ranked out title defender Maic Malchow from Leipzig and Emanuel Raasch from Berlin. Lothar Thoms was not on start. In 4000 m individual pursuit world road cycling champions Uwe Raab proved to the best among altogether 72 starters. In the final he ranked out Uwe Ampler his club mate from DHFK Sports Club Leipzig by the small margin of 5 seconds. Being on of the favorites because of his second place in 1983 Uwe Raah prepared his title victory in the semi final when he clearly ranked out qualification winner Mario Hernig.
