A BACIII airliner — Britain's newest aircraft — took off from Wisley, Surrey recently on a circular trip during which more tests were to be made on aerodynamics and ended in disaster when it lost height rapidly and plunged into this field at Stonehill Copse owned by Mr. John Morrison, Tory MP for Salisbury.
Our general view shows the wreckage which was strewn over a 200-yards area. The crew of seven died.
Police threw up a tight security guard around the crash site. BAC Managing Director Sir George Edwards has taken charge of the accident investigation, a Corporation spokesman said, this evening. The spokesman said, a "Black Box" crash recorder was found near the crash along with flight test instrumentation. "It is too early to say whether there is anything there to indicate the cause of the accident", he said and added there were "no last-minute radio messages" from the plane.
