President Kennedy pinning the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Distinguished Service Medal on Astronaut Leroy Gordon Cooper during ceremonies at the White House on May 21st. Major Cooper was honoured for his 22-orbit flight in Faith 7 space craft. Ringing them are (left-right) Mrs. Hattie Cooper (mother), wife Trudy, daughters Camala and Janita and four other astronauts, Virgil Crissom, Alan Shepard, Walter Schirra and Scott Carpenter. A citation accompanying Astronaut Cooper's medal reads: "His outstanding flight demonstrated man's ability to conduct engineering and scientific investigation in orbital space flight and added significantly to man's knowledge of space technology." Mr. Kennedy told him, "You have given the United States a great day and a great lift."
