Returning to New York, Fulton again took up the challenge of steam navigation. A shipbuilder supplied a vessel 131 feet long and about 20 feet wide, with a draft of six and a half feet and a displacement of 160 tons. A pair of paddle wheels on the sides were attached to an engine built in England to the inventor's specifications by Boulton and Watt. The engine had a cylinder two feet in diameter and a piston about four feet long. Fulton's distinctive achievement lay in calculating the total work to be done by the engine, the effectiveness of paddle wheels of various forms, and the resistance of the hull in the water.
Fulton announced a trial of his Clermont on August 17, 1807. A crowd gathered on the banks of the Hudson River at New York. Smoke poured from the stack and the boat moved slowly forward—then stopped. In a short time Fulton had the engine running again and it traveled 150 miles upstream to Albany in thirty-two hours.
