History

Widows and Orphans Pension Fund was established in 1884 under Ordinance No.15 of 1884 and repealed by Ordinance No.20 of 1885. This was regulated by Ordinance No.1 of 1898 as amended by Ordinance No.3 of 1900, No.13 of 1906, No.10 of 1907, No.13 of 1910, No.16 of 1911, and No.4 of 1915. Sessional Papers No.35 of 1896, No.9 of 1899 and Acts No.8 of 1948, No.33 of 1953 and No.45 of 1954 were pertaining to the subject.
Widows and Orphan Pension Fund was established to provide a pension to the Widows and Orphan of deceased public officers of the Island. Every public officer holding a permanent and personable post had to contribute 4 percent of the salary to the fund.
Under chapter 431, the Governor shall appoint any number of public officers not exceeding five as directors of the fund. The directors shall superintendent and direct the management and Administration of the fund. The directors are required to submit annual statement and account to be laid before the Legislative Council.
At the beginning Widows and Orphan Pension Fund functioned under the Governor. In the Year 1931-1947 under the Financial Secretary. In the aegis of 1947-1970 under the Ministry of Finance under the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs form 1970.
In the year 1970 W.O.P.F. was amalgamated with the Department of Pensions.
