Administrative history
Trincornalee a district in the Eastern Province was administered by the British East India Company from 1796.
The Revenue Administration was done by, an Assistant Revenue Superintendent, This office was abolished on 28th October 1798, and tile collection of Revenue was done through collectors. Trincomalee’s Administration of Civil, Military, and Financial was entrusted to the Commandant of the forces.
In 1833, on the recommendation of the Colcbrooke Commission a Government Agent was appointed for the Eastern Province, and was stationed at Trincornalee. In 1870 the Government Agent of this province was transferred from Trincomalec to Batticaloa. Trincomalee was placed under an Assistant Government Agent; who was responsible to the Government Agent, Eastern Province.
The military and civil duties exercised by the Disawa were separated. Accordingly, the collection of revenue, the maintenance of law and order through headmen system and extraction of the customary service were entrusted to the collector. All the regulations of the government were published and enforced through the kachcheri.
The Trincomalee District was divided into five Chief Headman's Divisions for administrative purpose. Viz; Town and Gravets, Kaddiya Pattu, Tamblegam Pattu, Kaddukkulam Pattu East and Kaddukkularn Pattu West. Under the Administrative Districts Act of 1955 No.22, Trincomalee was placed under a Government Agent.
