The Sansoni Commission was appointed in the 9th November, 1977 in terms of sec.2 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act (Cap.393) for the purpose of inquiring into and reporting on the following matters: -
(1) To ascertain the circumstances and the causes that led to, and the nature and the particulars of the incidents which took place in the Island between the 13th day of August 1977 and the 15th day of September 1977 and resulting in
(a) Death or injury of persons (b) The description or damage to property belonging to, or in the possession of any person, or any state institution or the State (c) The robbery or theft of any such property,
(2) Whether any persons or body of persons or Organisation or any person or persons connected with such Organisations (a) Committed or conspired to commit (b) aided or abetted in or conspired to aid or abet in the commission of or (c) in any manner assisted, encouraged or were concerned in or conspired to assist or encourage in the commitment of any of the acts referred to in paragraph (1) and
(3) To recommend such measures as may be necessary (a) To rehabilitate or assist in any other manner the person affected by such acts and (b) to ensure the safety of the Public and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
The Commission held 298 Sittings, 959 witnesses appeared before the Commission. Memoranda were received from Eleven Organisations. The Commissioner, Mr.M.C.Sansoni submitted his report in July 1980 and it was published as Sessional Paper No.VII of 1980.
