History

The River Valleys Development was established on 26th August, 1965 by the River Valleys Development Board (Amendment) Act No.6 of 1965. Originally this Board was known as the Galoya Development Board which was created on 24th November, 1949 under Act No.6 of 1949.
In 1979, with the increase in construction activities in the Country, the River Valleys Development Board was called upon to undertake major construction work all over the Island, mostly in the Mahaveli areas, The Board concentrated its resources in the development work of the accelerated Mahaveli Programme. 'I'he main areas of work were at Kalawewa in the H 4 and 5 Units, Madura Oya, Ulhitiya and the Victoria Project.
In 1983 the River Valleys Development Board handed over the Authority of the Walawe area to the Mahaveli Authority and consequently the Board confined its activities to, and expanded its role in heavy construction contracting industry.
Sevanagala Sugar Project, Weli Oya Settlement Project, Nuwara Eliya Technical Institution and Lunugam Vehera are some of the construction Projects of the Board.
At present this Board functions under the Ministry of Lands, Land Development and Mhaveli Development.
