History
Puttlam was one of the Six collectoratcs created in 1796/7. Thereafter it was under the Western Province. The seat was transferred from Puttalam to Chilaw in 1804 and continued to be a Collectorate upto 1845. This system was changed with the creation of North Western Province on 1 st October 1845. The Chilaw Kachchcri was closed and Puttalam became the seat of the govt agent of the NWP. In 1856 the seat of the Government Agent North Western Province was shifted from Puttlam to Kurunegala and Puttlam was placed under an Assistant Government Agent and on 01.01.1909 tile Chilaw Kachcheri was closed down again and the records were transferred to the Puttlam Kachcheri.
