Sri Lanka Post came into existent in 1815. Major function of the department is conveying and delivery of letters and other postal articles inland and foreign, administration and operation of post office savings bank ordinance, operation of telecommunication ordinance, sale of stamps and promotion of philatelic activities, periodic review of tarif, issue and payment of money orders, sale of savings certificates issue of TV and radio licenses and provision of agency services to government departments and corporation.
The Head of the Postal Department is Post Master General. Deputy Post mast general administration and deputy post master general postal services are assistant him. The administration of the department is handled by deputy postmaster general administration. The maintenance of the postal services its planning development and all operational works its performance under guidance of deputy post master general postal services. He is incharge of the deputy post master general postal services. He is incharge of the divisional offices. Department functioned under the aegis of the ministry of communication and works 1943-1946. In the years of 1949-1952 under The Ministry of Post and Telecommunication. In the year year 1953 under the posts and information ministry. In 1954-1955 under the ministry of posts and Broadcasting. There after under the ministry of posts broadcasting and information within 1956-1959. In the year 1960 under the ministry of posts works and power. During the period 1961-1964 under the ministry of Transport and works. In 1965-1969 under ministry of Public Works Posts and Telecommunication. In 1970-1991 under the ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
