History
The Kandyan Peasantry Commission submitted its Report on 28th February, 1951. One of its main recommendations related to the re-arrangement and re-organisation of Kachcheries.
At a conference, which was attended by the Heads of Departments and presided over by the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs it was decided that a new Kachchcri should be established at Monaragala. The new Kachchcri was declared open at a simple Ceremony presided over the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs, at which the Local Heads of Departments of Badulla District were present.
The new District covers the areas of Authority of Eight Village Committees and Two parliamentary Electorates, those of Bible and Moneragala.
The District of Monaragala covers about 2/3 of the land area of the orizinal Badulla District and about 20% of its population.
