History

The increase of economic activity following the liberal policies adopted by the Government since July 1977 resulted in the steady upsurge in the demand for Traffic which increased by nearly 17.5 per cent per Annum. In 1978 the normal rate of increase was around 8 per cent per Annum. This increase in the demand forced the Ministry into finding a quick solution to the passenger Transport Problem. Since the Boards were unable to meet this growing pressure on travel, a scheme of mixed Operators was introduced in April 1979, whereby Private Omnibus Operators were issued with Stage Carriage Permits by the Transport Boards to operate regular services to supplement the services of the Transport Boards. The Private Sector was quick to respond after the policy was spelt out by the Government and nearly 4000 buses were in the scene providing regular services both on the long and short distance routes.International Council on Archives: Guide to the Sources of Asian History.
