History
Matale was under the Kandyan Kingdom upto 2nd March 1815, after the Kandyan convention, it carne under British Administration. The Government executed its authority through the Resident at Kandy. John Doyly was appointed as the Resident of Kandy on 2nd March 1815. A Board of commissioners was set up for Kandyun Provinces. Ultimately, as from 1st October 1826 administration of Justice was entrusted to a great court consisting of the Board, tile adigars and Uva principal chiefs. All civil authority was experienced as before by tile native chief Matale was uncler a Disawe.
After the great rebellion of 1818, the Kandyan province was placed under commercial administration of the Governor. The Governor was assisted by a hoard of commissioners, consisting of Commander of the troops in Kandy and two civil servants. The Kandyan territory was divided into twenty districts and placed under Government Agents. A Military officer as Government Agent was in charge of Matale District.
On the recommendation of the Colebrookc Commission in 1833, Matale Kachchcri was under the Government Agent of Central Province. With effect from April 1, under the administration District Act No.22 of 1955, a Government Agent was appointed to Administer the District of Matale.
