Professor Senarath Paranavitana, then professor of Archaeology at the Peradeniya University had come to know that a silpa text known as the Manjusribhasitha Chitrakarmasastra was available with Rev.Varasambodhi thera of Chakkindarama, Gampola, Sri Lanka. However, before this information could be checked the priest had died and on his death the manuscript had come into the possession of his pupil Rev.Valivita Vijayasiri Thera. It has also come to be know that Rev.Vijayasiri was intending to sell the manuscript. This information. namely, that the manuscript was for sale, had been conveyed by professor Senarat Paranavithana and Dr.Nandascna Mudiyanse then a lecturer to Mr.Nissanka Wijeratne, then permanent secretary to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, recommended the purchase of the manuscript.
In defferance to this request, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs had informed the Director, National Archives, that steps may be taken to purchase the manuscript, and thus the manuscript was purchased by the Department of National Archives on 9th June, 1972 for Rs.800/=
