Administrative history
In 1825 Kandy Kachcheri was established in Kandy Palace under the Government Agent, George Turner. In 1868 the Kachcheri was shifted to Pattirippuwa next to the temple of the tooth relic under P.W.Braybrooke as the Government Agent. Then again it was temporally shifted to the present Post Office Building. In 1880, It was shifted to tile Court Building and F. B. Telllpler was the Government Agent. In 1857, September It was shifted to the present kachcheri Building. A.B.S.N.Pullanayagam was the Government Agent during third time.
The Central Province consisted of the country known as the District of Kandy. It was divided into Yatinuwara, Udunuwara, Harispattuwa, Tumpane, Dumbara, Hewaheta, Kotamale, Upper Bulathgama, Viyaluwa, Wegampaha, Kologampaha, Miyanagolla Palata of the Province of Bintenne and as the Dessavanics of Uva, Matale, Uda Palata and Walapane.
The Government Agent was entrusted with the general administrative work of the province and the provincial treasuries for the receipt of revenue and tile payment of the Local expenses of the province. Tile Government Agent was the Provincial Registrar Fiscal, Chairman of the Local Board, Provincial Road Committee.
Tile officer next to tile Government Agent or Assistant Government Agent was the chief native headmen called "Ratemahatmaya" next to the chief headmen ranks. The superior headman called "Korala" the village headman carne last. He was in charge of a village or something more.
In 1955, when official duties increased, Matale was made another district under a Government Agent. In 1956 Nuwara Eliya became another district under three Divisional Revenue Officers.
