Archival history
The Ceylon National Congress was formed on 11th December 1919 by a representative gathering of educated Ceylonese. The Ceylon National Association and the Ceylon Reforms League also were amalgamated. The first President was Ponnambalam Arunachalam. First secretaries were E.T.de Silva and M.A.Arulanandan. The main aim of the National Congress was to gain the political freedom from the British Rule. Hon.J.R.Jayewardane proposed to dissolve the National Congress, as they have achieved its goal of freedom. This was placed before a special conference in 28th May 1949. Some members did not like this proposal. George E.de Silva was the last President of CNC in 1950.
