History
The Sri Lanka Export Development Act approved by parliament in 1979 established the Export Development Council of Ministers under the Chairmanship of H.E. the president to provide the Leadership and direction to the National Export effort of the country.
In terms of the provisions of Act No. 40 of 1979, a focal-point Institution for Export Development was established ill 1979 in the form of tile Sri Lanka Export Development Board. The objectives of the Board were as follows: -
(a) Formulate a National Export Development Plan and programme and monitor its implementation.
(b) Advice the Government on Export Development Policies and Plans.
(c) Facilitate tile Development of supplies of Export Products.
(d) Provide essential services required by Exporters and act as a focal point to deal with Export problems. On the recommendation of the Board the Government declared Exports as a leading sector in the economic activities of the Government along with other leading sectors such as Mahaveli Development, Urban Development and Integrated Rural Development.
On the direction of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Export Development Board implemented a new Scheme for the prompt refund of Import Duties paid on Imported Raw Materials, component etc. utilised in Export production.
