History

According to the Regulation of 31st July 1809 established a minor court of Appeal for Tangalle in 1822. It usually consisted of the Provincial Judges, Collector, sitting Magistrate and another civil servant. The members usually sat together, the proceedings were usually circulated in rotation. This minor court of Appeal has no Jurisdiction in revenue cases.
Section 55 of the court ordinance No. 1 of 1889 empowered the Governor to establish. One court within each and every District of the Island. These Courts were called Districts Courts. The ordinance No.1 of 1889 the limits of its jurisdiction were Giruwa Pattu East & Giruwa Pattuwa, West.
This court has unlimited original jurisdiction in all civil, revenue, trust, insolvency and testamentary matters and over the persons and estates of persons of uncound mind.
