Administrative history

The District Court of Galle was established under the charter of Justice of 1833. The first District Judge of Galle was R.M.Sncye appointed by the Governor on 1st October, 1933.
The functions of the District Court were to hear and determine all Civil Lind Criminal Cases brought before the Court. In terms of the Administration of Justice Law No.44 of 1973, District Courts had original jurisdiction, within its District, in all civil, criminal. revenue, matrimonial. insolvency and testamentary matters, except matters exclusively assigned by way of original jurisdiction to any other Court or in any other authority. This court has unlimited original jurisdiction in all civil, revenue, trust, insolvency and testamentary matters and over the persons and estates of persons of unsound mind.
