History

According to the Regulation of 31st July 1909 established a minor Court of Appeal for Chilaw in December 1810. It usually consisted of the provincial Judge, Collector, Sitting Magistrate and another Civi1 Servant. The member usually sat together the proceedings were usually circulated in rotation. This minor Court of Appeal has no jurisdiction in Revenue cases.
By the 19th clause of the charter H.E. The Governor renamed the Minor Court of Appeal for Chilaw as District Court, This was held before a judge. The judges were appointed by letters patent and were to hold office during the pleasure of the Governor.
This court has unlimited original jurisdiction in all civil, revenue, trust, insolvency and testamentary matters and over the persons and estates of persons of unsound mind.
In 1923 Judicial Administration was under the chief Justice and the Attorney General. After the Donoughmore constitution the departments of Judiciary was established under the Legal Secretary After the Soulbury Constitution. The Judicial Service Commission was in charge of appointing, promoting and exercising discipline control over District Court Judges. 1972 Constitution established Judicial Service Commission to control all District Courts. The District Court of Chilaw fell under the Control of J.S.C.Since 1972 up to date.
