History
The British East India Company which controlled the Maritime Province of the Island from 1796- 1798 was not interested in Education. Frederick North came to Sri Lanka as Governor in 1798 and revived the Dutch system of Parish Schools. Education was in the hands of Christian Missionaries during the early British period. The first schools commission was appointed in 1834 with Archdeacon Glennie as its President. The Schools Commission was appointed in its place. The Colonial Secretary was the President of this commission. In January 1868 the Legislative Council accepted the recommendations of the Morgan Committee and abolished the Central Schools Commission. Thereafter the Department of Public Instruction was inaugurated in 1868. The designation of the Department was changed to the Department of Education in 1912
