History

In 1931, Industrial Development, for the first time, became a specific object of the Administration. Explanatory Surveys were conducted in selected areas and streams and Schemes were mooted for the Development of Cottage Industries in Ceylon.
"Cottage Industries" functioned under the Department of Industries until 1952. In 1952 a separate Department was created for cottage Industries under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Rural Development became a separate Department under the same Ministry.
In 1970 a new Ministry was created for Rural Development and Cottage Industries Department was re-named as the Small Industries Department.
The functions of the Department of Small Industries were as follows: -
(a) Registration, control, servicing and Development of Small Industries.
(b) Establishment and Maintenance of Workshops and Departmental Centres for the Production and
Sale of the Products.
(c) Establishment and Maintenance of Weaving Centres and the Sale of such Products.
(d) Training of Carpentry apprentices and the Establishment and Maintenance of Carpentary Work-
shops and Schools for the Production of Furniture.
(e) Export Promotion and the Export of Small Scale Industrial Products.
